Una has been with me for three months now. It’s time to reflect:
The past month has been about settling into our routine together. The walks around the neighborhood and in our home forest every day. Training and desensitizing Una on people, dogs, noises. Una has eaten her food mainly outside, as treats. We have spent a little time in the nearby park every day, practicing: sit, eye contact, targeting (the palm of my hand), down, stay (sitting or lying down) sometimes combined with tracking (Una stays while I make a 3-5 meter track on the lawn, I go back and allow Una to start tracking).
After Una got startled by two people on consecutive days a few weeks back, we have worked hard to build the trust back to a good level. My impression that Una easily gets afraid that something will attack her from behind has strengthened. If there is a sudden noise from behind, she tucks her tail and sprints forward, looking over her shoulder. Poor girl, I will never know what has happened to her 😦
Una is still very sensitive to sudden noises, overall, and I won’t take her to strange, noisy or busy places if I don’t absolutely have to, yet. It will take time to build her confidence in new situations, while I see her getting more and more relaxed in the familiar surroundings.
This week, we have started two training classes, the Arkatassukurssi at Heiluva Häntä, and a similar course led by Kirsi Ruuskanen, arranged by Etelä-Suomen seropit ry. I’m sure these will bring lots of good opportunities to train Una further in her new coping skills: we’ll set her up for success!
Below, there are two videos. The first one is from yesterday when we watched a nature program together. To celebrate her 3 months with me, Una got a rare treat when I gave her a few bits of my sandwich 😉
The second one is from today. We had a busy day: the training class and an afternoon hike in the Salmi recreational forest (it has become our regular weekend destination, fewer people than in Nuuksio…). As a result, Una has not moved for hours, out like a light! Right now, she is having a dream, sleeping beside me on the living room carpet. Running, by the looks of it…
