When I walk Una, she mostly walks, doesn’t trot much. Thinking about how to exercise Una, I decided to start jogging myself, slowly, in the forest paths about two times a week. I did this last Tuesday for the first time. I jogged about 15 minutes of our walk, slowly. As it turned out, even this was too much 😦 So, here we are, visiting my parents in Laukaa for the second time, and Una is limping like on the first visit…
Just like the first time after our first day hike, Una’s toe got sore about two days after the exercise and she started to limp. I could not have imagined that she couldn’t handle even the 15 minutes of gentle trotting. Our pace was really slow, she would trot the same way if I walked briskly on an even road. Or like some other dog would do when running free: the owner walking and the dog trotting ahead, stopping to sniff something interesting, trotting ahead again.
Well, obviously, the toe had not healed enough even though it didn’t hurt any more even when I examined it and pressed the nail with my finger. Lesson learned, Una will exercise for the next 4 weeks only by swimming and we keep walking at snail-pace… I have some Rimadyl left, and started a course on Thursday evening, to ease the pain and to reduce the inflammation. We have a control appointment for the orthopedic specialist in about 4 weeks, where I can discuss the situation more if needed.
I booked Una a swimming appointment for next Monday! We will drive to Hyvinkää and attend a beginner’s class with two other dogs. We’ll see how Una takes it – she likes to paddle in the water on the beach, but we don’t know if she has swum before 🙂
