Having Una’s paw sore again, we are keeping ourselves entertained by indoor and backyard activities. Una has learned to search for tiny bits of cheese before, on a light-coloured rug, where she cannot see them, or hidden behind chair and table legs. When she got over her initial confusion, Una proved to be a good search dog: she works – what an ambitious and grand term to use here 😉 – very calmly an thoroughly. Many dogs are so excited in this situation that they don’t have the patience to go slow and they miss many of the treats, rushing on.
Una has also proved to be a quick learner. You can se this on the video clip below. This was the first session where I hid some of the cheese above ground, on chair seats and such. When I helped her a bit by directing her to the first such location, she immediately started to search through similar places nearby.
After this, I helped Una to search from a new kind of place, on top of a handle on a wood stove. I stopped shooting so you can’t see it, but Una checked all the other handles on the stove right after she made a successful search on the first one! VERY clever, clearly understanding the concept of “similar object”! Wow, I’m impressed!!!
I may not have the most athletic dog in the world right now (sore toe, sensitive pads, can’t trot or run), but she certainly compensates this with her learning skills 🙂
