I like to hike. A lot. I mostly take longish day hikes in Nuuksio National Park, and shorter ones in a forest area close to where I live (this area is big enough for longer hikes, as well). This “backyard forest” of mine is absolutely great to have, it is so close I can go there with Una on every walk if I want to – absolutely luxurious!
We just got back from our longest forest walk so far. Maybe an hour and 15 minutes. I had a long tracking line (like a very long leash without a handle at the end) on her, so she could run free but I could stop her if necessary by catching the line. Every time we go into our woods Una is a little bit more confident, and today she ran quite happily ahead of me, smelling everything interesting that came along. And she found old remnants of feces of some kind of a predator (lots of animal hair in it) and rolled on it… Trying to camouflage her scent since she is a dog of the great wilderness now!
Una kept a moderately good eye on me while running. A few times she went a bit too far ahead, so I stopped and stood behind a tree. She soon noticed she was one person short, and came running back, happy to find me, and went off again. After a few of my disappearing acts she started to check on me often enough 🙂 Also, she starts to get used to all the tree roots and such on the path she has to manoeuver and the annoying twigs and branches that tickle her delicate legs. Today we made remarkable progress and walked a path so small it was practically like walking outside a path. And Una made it like a pro!
Una is getting a lot of interested looks here, half because of her socks, half because of her looks! Everyone asks which breed she is, and I have come up with a nice answer: she is a quality mix: I don’t know the ingredients, but the end result is top class! This gets people smiling 🙂
